I Love Cebu

Magellan's Cross
Magellan’s Cross

This is my birthplace but I spent the rest of my childhood days in Tabango, Leyte, and later in Makati.

When I was young I really wanted to visit Cebu because my cousins spent summer vacations here and they’d also enrolled in famous schools like USC, UC, USJ-R, UV, Cebu Velez College, Cebu Doctors University and SWU. I really had no chance to go there even though my cousin Dendoy and Vinson asked my mother one time to go with them (our family on vacation in Bogo that time)  . It’s like Cebu was very near to me “unta” when I read  signs of the buses, “Cebu”.

My previous company, TECH PACIFIC (in Makati) had to branched-out since  our Vismin business grew and they decided to hold an office in Cebu.  Since I was handling VISMIN accounts, they immediately assigned me, by no choice! So it was like transferring from a giant city of Makati to historical Cebu. But eventually our company (TP Phil.) was closed sometimes in 2001 and  was bought by Ingram-Micro.

Perhaps I am destined to live back for good on my native land. I had no regrets because there are great places to mention, beautiful beaches, falls in Badian, the historical places like Mactan Isaland, where Magellan, (the great explorer we learned about in our early school years), died. He was hit by a bolo (a large single-edged knife in the Philippines) by my great, great grandparent Lapu-lapu. He’s my relative because my Lolo Luis Tampus (my father’s father) is a native of Mactan.  So obviously, I have a partial right to claim him.  Just a claim, please don’t stop me.

Kidding aside, I belong to TAMPUS and BARING’s Family in Mactan, now known as Lapu-Lapu City. I am looking forward to meet some of my relatives (older generations) to get information about our ancestors, the family history and our family tree. (They might also have antique items that I can add to my collections, grin!).

We visited Cebu before with my family but we’re only in Bogo. It is a city in the northern tip of the island where my grandparents lived. They lived  somewhere in Nailon, one of its barangays. Portion of our land was sold to an American visitor who married a Filipina and he converted it to a beautiful spot named ‘Lovers Lane’, now the famous Nailon Beach Resort. My father told me that we could build our own house there if we want to. I happened to visit the place/land and tip of it is a cliff made of with limestone (ideal for a beach resort).

Cebu is beautiful and many tantalizing spots too. Please click, a great site of Cebu, with maps and spots to visit when you plan to have your own version of the famous Suroy-Suroy Sugbo of Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia . I have mine, too.
